Cheyenne Legislative Luncheon

The first few months of 2007 have been all about celebrating women's leadership for the Wyoming Women's Foundation! On February 12th, we held our annual Cheyenne luncheon "friendraiser" with many female legislators, legislative spouses, key elected officials, and other accomplished Wyoming women in attendance. Nearly 120 women attended our State Farm sponsored lunch, held at the Hitching Post Inn. Diane Shober, Director of Wyoming Travel and Tourism, served as the afternoon’s master of ceremonies, and urged the entire crowd to join WyWF in working to make the future a little brighter for the many women and girls of our great state.

Serving as the keynote speaker, Selina Hoflund of Frontier Refining shared some inspirational and fun remarks with our enthusiastic crowd. Born and raised in rural Malaysia, Hoflund always dreamed of a better life for herself. At the age of nineteen she made the solo trip to the United States in an effort to advance her dream. Since that move, Selina has accumulated almost twenty years experience in human resource management, earned a Ph.D. in Organization and Management, and received the 2005 Athena Award. She recognizes her proudest moment as becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1999. Today, Selina works as the Human Resource and Community Relations Manager at Frontier Refining Inc. in Cheyenne, and donates to WyWF and speaks on its behalf because of her own life experience, her passion in helping other people realize their potential, and her drive to address the many issues affecting women in our state and abroad. Not bad for someone who was once told her life was worth only two cans of milk and a chicken.

Selina’s inspirational comments were only strengthened by Pam Kozola and Sharon Johnson from Mother Seton House in Casper. The women shared how the grant from WyWF helped them implement their innovative "Bracelets of Hope" program. This program teaches residents of this transitional housing program how to make high quality bracelets that are then sold at local businesses in Casper. Many of these bracelets were sold at the event, and are available for purchase at businesses throughout Casper.

Thanks to all of you who were able to join us for this successful and inspiring "friendraiser!"
