Nine
years ago in October, Merle Chambers, the president of the Chambers
Family Fund, promised to match up to $500,000 in donations
to launch a new foundation and succeeded. The first
donation to the Wyoming Women's Foundation was $55,000 by advisory
board member Kathy Priebe of Casper. The first board meeting of the
women's foundation consisted of six women - Merle Chambers, Kathy
Priebe, Val Burgess, Georgie Crawford, Rev. Marilyn Engstrom, and

WAGE Project coming to Wyoming Again |
If
you missed the chance to participate in the WAGE Workshops in March,
you have another chance this week! The WAGE Project is
holding workshops in five towns throughout Wyoming. Anne Houle,
Campus and Community Organizer of the WAGE
project, believes that reaching women with valid information and
resources at the beginning of their careers will help eliminate the
wage gap and enable women to reach for top salaries. The
workshops will help women understand their worth
and needs, assess the going salaries for jobs of their
choice and comprehend how benefits and deductions will affect their
pay check, enabling them to negotiate better salaries and wages.
The WAGE Project is also offering "Train the Trainer"
workshops this year in which women will learn to be facilitators of
future workshops, continuing to increase awareness and knowledge
throughout Wyoming. Below is the schedule for upcoming workshops:

Giving During Times of Economic Downturn |
|
With
the current state of the economy, philanthropy plays an even greater
role in the lives of those hit the hardest. By giving to the
Wyoming Women's Foundation, you are investing in the economic
growth of our state by providing economic self-sufficiency for
women and girls. At our October board meeting, the board granted over
$75,000 to fifteen organizations that will assist those
most in need. We can do this because our permanent endowment is not
threatened by this downturn. Our investment policy
mitigates some of the risk other foundations have taken on. Our grant
dollars have not decreased because they are based on a three-year
average, or twelve rolling quarters, of our endowment asset
base, offsetting potential volatility brought on by market
fluctuation. This year grant requests exceeded our available funds
four to one. This shows the need for our support especially
during economically challenging times. Increased grant requests can
be attributed to both dwindling government funding, poor fundraising
returns and economic conditions.
We
are appealing to you now to make a difference in the lives of
Wyoming's women and girls in these times when the need is
so great. Please consider a gift to the Wyoming Women's
Foundation.

I
will be traveling this week around the state with the WAGE
Project, please see above for our locations. We are partnering
with the Department of Workforce Services, community colleges, BOCES
and the University of Wyoming. Our partner, the Casper Star
Tribune, in a very generous
gesture, contributed the advertising for our
workshops this week. This workshop initiative is
just beginning and we plan to oversee the development of the
materials as they are distributed throughout Wyoming this upcoming
year. It is important that our women and girls learn how the
wage gap happens and what they can do to influence it in their
personal careers and the working lives of those they know. If
you are interested in learning about further workshops and/or how to
get involved, please contact us at the foundation.
