Jill Morrison

Jill Morrison seems to actually listen to private citizens and hear real concerns from people about property and water issues and then use the knowledge she’s gained from years in the field and on the ground to secure the lands that people respect as their livelihood and their home. With a belief in accountability, she excels at organizing the pieces that need to fit to ensure a working future for the state. After graduating from college in Arizona, she organized workers at a nuclear-power plant to voice concerns about shoddy plant construction and mismanagement. Later, she became an award-winning investigative reporter. In 1990 she became a community organizer for the Powder River Basin Resource Council (PRBRC) which aims to protect our water, air, land and wildlife while ensuring careful development of our mineral resources for the benefit of our current and future generations.

Morrison knows that women often bring feeling and an instinctual knowledge that something is worth preserving. With real conservation, the history and future are not just about counting up the dollars and cents in between. Morrison says, “Women have and continue to play a key role in this organization, ensuring protection of our vital air, water and land; resources that sustain life.”

Morrison isn’t afraid to call up other women for help because she knows that they will be able to guide, initiate, or step in to help. History and strong ties to the land and water seem to well up to meet her course of action and propel it forward. Keeping the future is a constant for Morrison. "We need adequate financial assurances at the state and federal level so that down the road Wyoming will not be left with a scarred oil and gas battlefield that will saddle the taxpayer and landowner with cleanup costs," Morrison says.

“Jill Morrison is a mother of two who has worked tirelessly on behalf of ranchers in northeast Wyoming to preserve their lands and waters,” says Kate Fox. “As organizer for the Powder River Basin Resource Council, she [Morrison] keeps informed on a variety of complex environmental and regulatory issues, has galvanized the membership, raised funds, and worked ceaselessly to preserve the landscape and the lifestyles of folks in the Powder River Basin. She works hard for a vision of Wyoming that is often thwarted and frequently unsuccessful, yet she maintains her fighting spirit and helps to keep the balance in a land where making room for all views makes us all stronger.”
