What Makes Good Business Sense?

More Women in Leadership Positions

Great necessities call forth great leaders.
-- Abigail Adams

Women make up more than half the population, so it's far past time that board rooms and businesses begin to reflect the same.  We have a long way to go; only fifteen of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women and women comprise a mere 15.2% of Fortune 500 board's membership.

Here in Wyoming 25.5% (2007 census) of businesses are woman owned.

But there is promise of these numbers rising - research is showing that including women in leadership positions brings a different perspective to the table and improves profitability.

We've got some great examples of successful women in business:  COO of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg and co-founder of Marvel, Weili Dai, have both set the bar for women in the tech world.  And here at home, Georgia Gayle owner of Z4 Energy is making strides by working to development innovative renewable energy products.

As businesses begin to recognize what can be gained when women are in leadership positions, we will see more women and men working together to make huge gains in the business world!

WYWF Grantee Focus:  AAUW WAGE Negotiation Workshops

istock work womanWyoming has the largest wage gap (the difference in earnings of men and women) in the nation at 65%.  The reasons behind the wage gap are complicated and often difficult to pinpoint, but one factor that consistently seems to a play a role in reduced earnings is that women are less likely to negotiate their salaries.  The Wyoming Women's Foundation in its support of AAUW is working to change this. More
