| Lily Ledbetter has been a pioneer in the most recent fight for pay equity. |
April 12th is Equal Pay Day . It may seem like a random date to raise awareness about the wage gap in the United States, but this date is very significant. On April 12th of this year, the average American woman will have just made, in the span of roughly 15 and a half months, the equivalent of what the average American man earned in 12. Awareness is one of the most critical factors in shrinking the wage gap. Women comprise half of the workforce and in tough economic conditions often find themselves the sole breadwinner in her household.
The Wyoming Women's Foundation is working in collaboration with several groups around Wyoming to make pay equity a reality. For the past several years the Foundation has hosted wage negotiating trainings and in 2010 the trainings were passed into the hands of active community groups. American Association of University Women (AAUW) Chapters throughout the state with assistance from a WYWF grant held workshops on wage negotiation. Carbon County Higher Education Center (CCHEC) received a similar grant to host training workshops all over Carbon County, including in every high school and in ESL classes. Both groups shared with women in their communities tools and strategies needed when negotiating wages.
With incredible effort, the wage gap may be eliminated in time. But as we currently stand, Wyoming ranks dead last in pay equity. While multiple factors must be considered in the wage gap discussion, the "Equality State" could be a much more opportunistic place for our state's women. It's up to community organizations and individuals to make it happen because when women earn more, entire families benefit!

Fabulous Wyoming Women!

The much anticipated Women to Watch website is up and running!
The website serves as a storehouse of movers and shakers across the state willing to share their time and talents with others. This new website will serve as a central location where women can be found to serve as speakers, board members, committee members, or simply as resources for information, to name a few possibilities.
If you know someone who you feel would be a great candidate, please nominate them here.
